The second annual Juneteenth Fun Run is returning to Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.

Over 300 runners are expected to gather in celebration of the third year of Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday commemorating the abolishment of slavery in the U.S.

Event spokesperson Devin Sundquist says events like these are important, and that engaging community in a healthy activity like running makes it even more special.

"It's really important and we're really honored that we get to play a really small role in this Theater Worth Park," says Sundquist. "Actually used to be one of the hosting locations of one of the largest Juneteenth celebrations in Minneapolis. At one point, it had over 25,000 people in attendance, which, while we're not quite at those numbers, we're hoping that will continue to grow year by year."

Sundquist says the event will be put on in Community Elder Beverly Propes' honor who has been a longtime advocate for overcoming health disparity in North Minneapolis.

"Beverly has been a really incredible, longtime advocate for overcoming health disparity in North Minneapolis," Sundquist explains. "And so it's been really incredible to hear how she's used her connections to help the community live a longer, healthier life."

The kid-friendly run will take place along the paved trail that runs thought the Theodore Wirth Park. Registration for the event is free but donations are suggested. It all kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday
