St. Paul police say a man who was said to be threatening others with a knife at an apartment complex was fatally shot by officers Saturday.

Officers were wearing body cams during the incident at the Winslow Commons apartment building on the 100 block of Western Avenue South.

The shooting took place around 5:00 p.m. Saturday after police responded to a call that a man with a knife was threatening people in the building's community room.

According to a statement made by St. Paul police Sgt. Mike Ernster, the man was holding a knife when officers approached him on the first floor of the building.

Ernster says after officers tried to get the man to drop the knife, they retreated and he advanced toward them, with one officer deploying a taser and another firing his gun at the man.

Medics from the St. Paul Fire Department tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene, Ernster said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirms they are investigating the incident, which is standard for officer-involved shootings that happen in the state.

Names are not released.
