A taconite-carrying freighter that hit an unknown object in Lake Superior and began taking on water is now docked in Thunder Bay, Ontario after US Coast Guard crews came to the rescue.
Personnel on board the 689-foot vessel Michipicoten reported the accident about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale around 7:00 Saturday morning.
The Coast Guard sent a helicopter and multiple boats to the scene.
All 22 people on board the vessel are safe.
Officials say none of the taconite has spilled into the lake, and that pumps removing water have reduced the freighter's listing from 15 degrees to five degrees.
Records show the Michipicoten is owned by Canadian-based Lower Lakes Shipping, and has been in service for more than seventy years.
It's not known what the vessel hit, and how much damage was caused.
