A $30 million lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis filed by several businesses near George Floyd Square has been thrown out by a judge.

Late last year, the owners of Cup Foods and others near 38th and Chicago, the intersection where Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, claimed in their lawsuit the city failed to address crime in the neighborhood which in turn ruined their business.

That, they say, constitutes an unlawful taking of their property without just compensation. They also added they lost revenue, real estate value, reputation and tenant/rent income.

In the dismissal order, the judge said there was no evidence to back up those claims.

The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it can not be filed again.

One other lawsuit filed by businesses was already dismissed last year. There is one more open suit that remains open and has an August hearing scheduled.
