Murder charges are filed against a man who police say ran over a teenage girl over the weekend in Forest Lake.
20-year old Dylan Simmons of North Branch remains in the Washington County jail where he was taken after surrendering to police not long after the collision happened. Simmons is charged with third-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide and was driving a white Mazda 3.
Witnesses say two groups of people were fighting in the area of West Broadway and Highway 61 before a car drove twice into the crowd striking and killing 17-year old Darisha Vath of Stacy, Minnesota.
Vath was located in the municipal parking lot and life saving measures were attempted by Officers, EMS, and Fire personnel on scene. She was pronounced dead at the location by EMS personnel.
Forest Lake Police say the suspect and victim were known to each other. This is an active on-going investigation. Police reportedly have video that captured the incident.
Stacy's father, Darius Bailey, told WCCO-TV he regrets not making enough time for his daughter.
“Spend as much time as you can as possible with your kids,” Bailey said. “Because we did not expect this, we neglected our time with her.”
The girl's parents say her ex-boyfriend was also in the car that hit her.
