Authorities in northern Minnesota say a man is dead after he jumped from Minnesota's highest waterfall on Monday and drowned.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. inside Tettegouche State Park, along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office says the 54-year-old man jumped from the Baptism River’s High Falls and didn't resurface.

His body was found at the base of the falls by the Minnesota DNR which used a remotely operated vehicle underwater as part of their search efforts.

The man's identity is not being released until family is notified.

At 63-feet, the High Falls of the Baptism River is the tallest waterfall fully within Minnesota’s state border. Only Pigeon Falls, which creates Minnesota's border with Canada near Grand Portage, is taller.
