25 measles cases have been reported since mid-September in two unrelated clusters in Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Health which said Thursday that all of the individuals sickened by measles in recent weeks were unvaccinated.
Nineteen of the newly reported measles cases were reported in Todd County, with the other six cases reported in Fillmore County.
"Given how contagious measles is, the case count will very likely grow in the days and weeks ahead. The current total for measles cases in Minnesota is 42 cases in 2026," the department wrote in a wrote in a news release.
The recent surge prompted the agency to renew a call for unvaccinated or under-vaccinated individuals to get vaccinated, as case numbers are expected to rise.
"In our highly mobile society, that means exposure can occur in any community, in any county. There are pockets of unvaccinated or under-vaccinated people across Minnesota, and anyone who isn't vaccinated against measles is at risk — especially right now," MDH said.
Twenty-five measles cases were reported in 2025, down from 70 cases reported the year before. The highest number of measles cases reported in Minnesota since 2016 occurred in 2017 with 75, marking the state's largest outbreak in three decades.
