It's been revealed that Mark Pavelich, a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice USA hockey team, took his own life at a treatment facility last month.
Pavelich, 63, was at the Sauk Center facility under a civil commitment agreement after he assaulted a neighbor on the North Shore in 2019.
He was found dead March 3rd, and Monday, the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Anoka County said Pavelich died of asphyxia.
Pavelich grew up in Eveleth on Minnesota's Iron Range and played three years of college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth before a decade-long career in the NHL.
Pavelich's was the second death among players on the team that won the 1980 Gold Medal at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY.
Bob Suter, father of Wild defenseman Ryan Suter, died of a heart attack in 2014.
Herb Brooks of St. Paul, who was head coach of the team, died in a car crash in 2003.
