The Operation Gopher Guardian program that aims to keep University of Minnesota students and faculty safe goes into effect this weekend, and is brought back next weekend.

It includes having ten additional officers staff the Dinkytown and Marcy-Holmes neighborhood from Friday night through early Sunday morning.

But for some parents of U-of-M students, more needs to be done on a long-term basis.

"This two-week bandage doesn't even begin to be enough," said Beth Ambaruch of Univeristy of Minnesota Parents on Crime on the WCCO Morning News with Vineeta Sawkar.

"We've been in contact with the board of regents, President Gabel, just about every department that you can think of tha't connected to student life," she said. "They're not delivering anything other than fliers and emails, and talk about how to be safe, and a few reactive multi-week programs."

She and the group are calling on U administrators to get more creative when it comes to keeping everyone on campus safe.

"This is a Big Ten university, challenging students to think creatively in order to solve these big problems," Ambaruch said. "We ask the same of this administration."

Under Operation Gopher Guardian, the U-of-M will pay additional campus police and MPD officers to patrol the Dinkytown and Marcy-Holmes areas from Friday night to Sunday morning this weekend and next.

This comes after several incidents in recent weeks, including people getting injured by firecrackers set off inside a fraternity house and a pizza restaurant.
