Metro Transit held an open house in the IDS Crystal Court in downtown Minneapolis Tuesday to gather feedback about about the possibility of moving transit off of Nicollet Mall.
Kathleen Mayell with City of Minneapolis Public Works Department explains the purpose of this proposal.
"The buy behind this proposal is to pedestrianize Nicollet Mall," says Mayell. "This is a super important transit corridor, and we want to ensure that transit, when it moves off the mall, the service will be just as good or better."
Kathleen and others with the city spoke with transit riders about the three options on the table.
"There's trade-offs of each of the three options, and we're out here talking to people to see what they think," explains Mayell.
Of course, there are concerns about the ideas.
"I have a lot of concerns for seniors, for people with children, people with handicaps to have to, you know, negotiate the the streets," explained one person in attendance. "I don't like any of these options."
Regardless, one these will be chosen, but won't go into affect for at least another year say organizers.
"We are planning on coming to a preferred corridor later this spring and then doing some engagement around that corridor," Mayell said. "Then there would be an agreement between the city and Metro Transit on kind of what a change of transit would look like, and that would really set in motion the course to getting it done."
