Last Tuesday, Minneapolis voted on a ballot measure that would allow the City Council to enact rent control.
Now, the people who put the question on the ballot say they want to see policies enacted soon.
“This mandate means that people expect swift action,” says Claire Bergren who is the campaign managers for the “Home to Stay” coalition. “Now we don't need more studies. We don't need to collect more data. We need action now from our elected officials. The rents cannot, and it will not wait.”

On their website, the coalition says, "The Home to Stay Rent Stabilization coalition is an alignment of organizations and unions representing thousands of Minneapolis residents across race, income and zip code who support changing the charter this year to give Minneapolis the power to pass a Rent Stabilization policy in 2022."
Aliza Tresser is a renter with Jewish Community Action. She says the rent can't wait and the City Council shouldn't either.
“The city elected officials must get to work to pass a policy that ensures our neighbors stay in their homes,” Tresser said. “Not only must they pass the policy, but they must do it quickly before more families are displaced by unreasonable rent hikes.”
Tresser says she moved to Minneapolis after experiencing a 40% rent increase in St. Paul.
Members of "Home to Stay" say they will be working with the new city council to create a strong rent control policy across the city.
