Minneapolis City Counci member Aisha Chugtai taking month-long leave to address her mental health

Minneapolis City Council member Aisha Chugtai is stepping away from her post for a month to address her mental health.


Chugtai shared it in a letter to constituents Monday, saying in a newsletter that after last year, with a mass shooting and Operation Metro Surge, she is taking time off to address mental health issues.

She said she will take part in an outpatient program during that time.

"Like 23% of American adults, I also work every day to deal with my mental health and I have ignored my own needs for too long," she wrote.

Chugtai says staff will take care of business while she's away.


"I love representing the people of this Ward," Chugtai said about Ward 10, which covers East Bde Maka Ska, East Isles, Lowry Hill East, South Uptown, and the Whittier neighborhoods. "It's the greatest honor of my life. And that's why I feel obligated to do so to the best of my abilities.
