Minneapolis rolls out the heavy machinery for first ever "Big Honking Truck Parade" on Thursday

It'll be a lot more than city buses on Nicollet Mall Thursday night as Minneapolis hosts the first ever "Big Honking Truck Parade" with city trucks, fire trucks, police trucks, construction vehicles and more rumbling down the avenue.

Trucks, trucks, and more trucks. It's all thing trucks in Downtown Minneapolis for the first ever "Minneapolis Moves: The Big Honking Truck Parade" on Thursday. And yes, you're reading that right.

Will there be firetrucks?

"Yes," declares Jess Olstead, with the City of Minneapolis explains the purpose of the parade.

Whwat about dump trucks?

"Not sure," she says.

Tow trucks?

"Not sure," she laughs.

We're striking out here. Ok, Jess Olstead, let's cut to it - what WILL be at the "Big Honking Truck Parade?"

"City trucks, fire trucks, police trucks, there's going to be construction vehicles, one of which is so big, they have to put it on a 75 foot trailer, a tunnel washer truck, which is very exciting," says Olstead.

She also explained the entire purpose of the parade.

"Trucks honk and beep, and they're big and they're fabulous, and they do the work of the city," she says. "So this is a great way to show to all of the people and the trucks and the vehicles that make the city run every day."

Sounds like a truckin' good time.

The parade will rumble - literally - down Nicollet Mall from East Grant Street to South Sixth Street Thursday evening.

"There's literally something for everyone in the family," says Olstead. "So you've got the truck parade for the aficionados there, and then you've got a maker's market, to get food and wares and handcrafted goods. So it's really a great event to bring everyone downtown and have some fun as a family."

The event goes from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the parade starting at 5:30.

“From fire engines to snowplows, residents of all ages know that Minneapolis is the best trucking city ever!” said Mayor Jacob Frey. "So we thought, 'Why not bring them all together for a big parade downtown?' It’s a fun way for families to connect with the people and equipment that keeps our city trucking. And it’s one more way we're bringing Nicollet Mall to life."

Nicollet Mall will host more than 30 local businesses for an evening market experience. Visitors can shop local, homemade wares and grab food from the various Twin Cities-based booths. The Lofton Hotel is even crafting four special flavors of homemade ice cream for the occasion, including “Street Sweeper S’mores” and “Ladder Up Lemon & Tangerine Sorbet.”
