Minneapolis Animal Care and Control held their first of three vaccine clinics on Tuesday.
It's the owner's choice which vaccines they're pets receive, says MACC's Tony Schendel.
"We offer rabies, distemper, and microchip, and we offer them for $10 apiece," says Schendel.
The law requires pets in Minneapolis to be licensed and vaccinated for rabies, and vet appointments can be full, and expensive. But aside from the law requiring pets to be vaccinated there are other reasons to get the vaccinations.
"The biggest reason being, if it bites someone, they're protected," Schendel explains. "And if they're exposed to an animal, a wild animal that's a rabies vector, then it can be at home on quarantine most times versus having to be impounded, and doesn't risk the safety of the pet or their family."
Schendel also adds it's important for dogs to get a distemper shots because the parvovirus is highly contagious.
"That's where we see parvovirus, which is almost deadly in all the cases," Schendel said. "Because it is such a horrible virus that these dogs get. Because if they are outside walking, they're susceptible to contracting it. It's highly contagious and could be the difference in their pet's life."
The next clinic will be December 3rd from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Find more information here.
