Minneapolis police are investigating a second and third fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday night, just hours after an earlier shooting left one person dead and six injured.

One incident took place around 8:00 p.m. on the 2700 block of Third Avenue South in the Whittier neighborhood.

First responders preformed CPR on at least one victim at the scene, who has now been confirmed dead.

Then, a third person was killed, all in the span of 24 hours, following a shooting in the early morning in downtown Minneapolis

It happened shortly after 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of 8th Street and Hennepin Avenue.

Police responded to the scene and found shell casings on the ground.  A significant police presence remained in the area as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not released further details but are expected to provide an update later on Wednesday.

Police reported Tuesday afternoon that the shooting near East Lake Street and Clinton Ave. left six people injured and one person dead. The victims are five men and one woman. All six of the injured victims are expected to survive.

"This level of violence is sickening and completely unacceptable," said Police Chief Brian O'Hara who says it appears at least one of the victims was targeted.

O'Hara says the weapon used was a high-velocity rifle that did a lot of damage.

"It's obvious from the injuries suffered here, the significant damage those types of rounds can do to the human body. It's gross," O'Hara says.

Officials have not confirmed if the two shootings are connected, or if it is connected to the shooting Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation into all three incidents is ongoing.
