One person is in custody following a south Minneapolis hit and run on Wednesday that's being investigated as a potential hate crime.
It happened outside the Alhikma Islamic Center near Nicollet Ave. South and 32nd Street.
Council on American-Islamic Relations Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein says the victim is an employee of his and that there were several incidents that led up to the attack.
"This is a suspect that's been known to the mosque, has been causing harassment and targeting of the mosque," Hussein says. "It has been reported before, he's broken the door before, among the incidents of hate, and we believe it's a continuation of the escalation of those attacks against the mosque."
Hussein says its a relief to the community that the suspect is behind bars.
Video from the mosque captured a minivan driving directly towards a man at his car in the parking lot, striking him and sending him into the air, before speeding off.
The victim was able to run away to get help and is expected to be fine.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara says the suspect is known to police and had a history of trespassing and acting erratically at the mosque and in the neighborhood.
