Minneapolis police continue to search for the driver of a stolen car that slammed into another, killing its driver and then fleeing the scene earlier this week.

The accident happened Tuesday night on the north side near the intersection of Washington and 22nd.

The incident is the latest involving a stolen vehicle, in particular, a Hyundai, which, along with Kia’s, are much more prone to theft.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison says those brands do not have anti-theft safeguards like most others do, which is why his office is pursuing legal action against the auto manufacturers.

Ellison also says while those who are stealing the vehicles need to be held accountable, so too do the car companies, who he says have ignored pleas to fix their shortcomings.

“They’ve been notified literally thousands of times that it’s inadequate. And they’ve done nothing other than half-measures and the most superficial things,” Ellison said. “What they haven’t done is what they should do, which is recall these cars.”

The Minnesota Attorney General’s office is continuing to gather evidence ahead of the possible civil lawsuit against the companies.

In March, he and other Attorneys General in the country were denied a request for a recall of the vehicles, but he is still calling on them to do so.
