The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority broke ground on a new triplex and a duplex, partially funded by the city’s housing tax levy.

That levy contributed $1.25 million dollars to the project.

MPHA's Executive Director Abdi Warsame says the work will start at these new properties in the Wyndham and Regina neighborhood to help address the critical shortage of family housing in Minneapolis.

"That's why this project is so important," says Warsame. "It demonstrates the power of partnership. It demonstrates the commitment of the City of Minneapolis to address our region's affordable housing crisis."

He says these projects were made possible in part because of Minneapolis lifting its single-family zoning restrictions in 2020 as part of the city’s 2040 comprehensive plan.

There are currently close to 4,000 families on the agency’s waitlist. MPHA says they are continuing to explore opportunities to add new family homes with larger bedroom counts, including the possibility of adding additional family homes as a part of any future Glendale redevelopment and construction project.
