The pool of over 2,600 submissions for Minnesota's new state flag and seal was narrowed down to just a select few on Tuesday by the State Emblems Redesign Commission which selected its six top choices for the state flag and the top five choices for the seal.

All of the flag finalists have a star of some sort reflecting the state motto and some shade of blue representing Minnesota lakes.

"I found the stories behind the flags to be probably the most compelling," noted one of the State Emblems Redesign Commission members. "So it might not have been the right colors or followed all the rules, but the ones I landed on were the ones that told a really great story of Minnesota and who we were."

After more than six hour of deliberating the commission landed on six flag designs for the public to review. The flag selections included F29, F944, F1154, F1435, F1953, and F2100.

All of the state flag submissions can all be viewed here.

Deliberation over the state seal did not take as long as the flag deliberation.

Design S224 was selected by all 12 commissioners.

Minnesota state seal finalists (S2, S6, S27, S147, and S224) can be viewed here.

"I think a prime one we should think of is simplicity. We've heard that kids should be able to draw the flag and people should be able to draw it from memory. I think that's a goal that we want to keep in mind."

Under state law, a new design must be chosen by January 1rst.
