Members of the Minnesota House of Representatives worked late Monday night, but action on a far-reaching bill to legalize recreational marijuana in the state was tabled just before midnight.
Lawmakers agreed to return to the state capitol in St. Paul on Tuesday for a vote on the controversial measure.
The measure is expected in the House, where Democrats comfortably outnumber Republicans.
The Senate, where Democrats hold only a one-seat majority, is scheduled to vote Friday on its own version.
If versions of the proposal pass both chambers, a conference committee would then resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions.
Both chambers would then have to sign off on the final version before sending it to Democratic Gov. Walz, who has pledged to sign it into law.
At least 21 other states have passed laws legalizing recreational use of marijuana by adults.
