Senate DFL leaders announced Sunday that state Sen. Nicole Mitchell would be relieved of her committee assignments and would not caucus with DFL lawmakers while her burglary case proceeds in the courts.
Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) said in a statement that the situation is “tragic” and questions remained unanswered, but she stopped short of blocking Mitchell from participating in floor votes.
“While the case is under review both in the Senate and in the courts, Senator Mitchell will be relieved of her committee assignments and removed from caucus meetings,” Murphy said.
Last week, Republican state senators introduced a motion to expel Mitchell (Woodbury) after she was formally charged with first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into her stepmother's Detroit Lakes home early Monday morning.
In a statement released through her attorney, Mitchell expressed disappointment and said there is information that hasn't been publicly shared yet.
“While I cannot elaborate more at the advice of counsel, I can say I am extremely disappointed that the complaint lacks the complete information of the incident including important context, including that I have known the other person involved in this incident since I was four and care deeply about her,” Mitchell said.
