A week ago, the Minnesota state capitol building was active with the workings of the legislative process.

On Monday, silence.

Only one flag now flies over the historic building… the stars and stripes... at half-mast.

People continue to make their way to the capitol to pay respects to House Speaker emerita Melissa Hortman and state Senator Mark Hoffman.

A number of state workers from the surrounding complex, their ID badges waving in the humid air, came together to remember and reflect.

At the steps of the capitol are two separate memorials.

One is stacked with flowers, signs, photos and other items.

The other is a dreamcatcher that displays the names of the victims.

“So devastated, so incredibly sad,” said Olivia Hitchcock-Willis, who works at the capitol and is close with Senator Hoffman.

“The best of people who’ve worked hard for our state don’t derserve this,” she said, her voice heavy with sorrow.

Lory Perryman said those leaving mementos are showing that they care.

“It’s really beautiful how people have brought items of beauty and signs that represent their feelings,”  she said.
