A special honor at the Minnesota State Fair for Melissa Hortman, the state representative and former House Speaker who was killed in a political attack in June.
WCCO's Susie Jones traveled inside the fair's Horticulture Building where there was a long line to get in to see the crop art. That included a lot of people waiting to see the picture made out of crops of Melissa Hortman.
Hortman was recreated in Minnesota-grown seeds, stems and other plant parts.
Jones noted that a lot of people she talked to said it's very emotional to see - and they still can't believe it happened to begin with.
Doug Gentry of Otsego, Minnesota said that it's particularly poignant to him.
"It's kind of a statement on where we are politically right now and the empathy that we can feel from that," says Gentry. "I wish that both sides could do that."
Several fair goers offered their reflections.
"I think it's incredibly emotional to see, to be honest. I'm so glad that they did it," said one woman.
"It's a beautiful likeness, whoever did that stunning. Is it a first place ribbon too? No, I think it's should have been first," added another.
One of Hortman’s colleagues, Representative Athena Hollins of St. Paul, created the piece as a way to honor Hortman.
The piece is now displayed for all to see alongside the other crop art in the Agriculture and Horticulture building at the Great Minnesota Get-Together. The building is on the corner of Underwood and Judson near the Space Tower.
