The snow has melted and the weather is warming. For many people, that means getting outdoors. After two years of pandemic fueled travel restrictions, Minnesota festivals and events are making huge returns.

State tourism director, Lauren Bennett McGinty, spoke with WCCO's Susie Jones during the 9-noon show. McGinty said 2022 will be a busy year for Minnesota's tourism industry.

"There's kind of this itch to get out there and re-experience the world," said McGinty. Even with rising case numbers, inflation and high fuel costs, travel outlook remains strong. "With gas prices going up, people still want to take their family places, or maybe a romantic getaway. It might not be as long of a trip, as they had planned originally, but everyone wants to just emerge."

During the pandemic, the state lost $14 billion dollars in travel spending. Leaders in the tourism industry are hoping to recoup those losses. According to Explore Minnesota, fairs, festivals and events contribute to Minnesota's $16.6 billion dollar tourism industry.

"While we remain cautiously optimistic, attending events is a great way to connect with family and friends, and support the wide variety of events Minnesota has to offer," said Junia Joseph-Benham, president, Minnesota Festivals and Events Association.

Starting this summer, travelers can expect milestone celebrations. Some events to look forward to include the 100th Birthday of Judy Garland in Grand Rapids, the 40th Anniversary of the Twin Cities Marathon, and Mall of America's 30th Birthday.

The Twin Cities Pride Festival, will also be celebrating a big anniversary. In fact, pop star Carly Rae Jepsen will headline next month's Twin Cities Pride Festival...with a concert at the Armory in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 25th.
