A new benefit for Minnesota workers goes into effect in just two weeks as the newly signed earned sick and safe time law will begin on Jan. 1, 2024.

The law is meant to ensure that all Minnesotans have access to time off to care for themselves and their loved ones. It also assures time off for victims of domestic or sexual abuse and stalking.

Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Nicole Blissenbach says that the bill will have tons of benefits for Minnesotans and was written broadly for a reason.

“The law was purposefully broad because we know people have to have access to this benefit,” Blissenbach said.

The law states that for every 30 hours worked, the employee will get one hour off.

“We know that everyone deserves paid time away to heal, to grow, and to live,” Lt. Governor Peggy Flannagan said.
