MN Senate hearing on Voter ID gets testy

MN Secretary of State spars with Republican Senators

Voter ID is back for consideration in Minnesota, thanks to the Republicans who control the Minnesota Senate.

During a Senate Committee on State Government Finance and Policy and Elections hearing on Voter ID Wednesday, Senator Dave Osmek (R) wanted a 'yes' or 'no' answer from Secretary of State Steve Simon (D) if voter fraud exists.

When Simon tried to give a detailed answer, committee chair Senator Mary Kiffmeyer (R) tried to pin him down, at which point Simon became irritated.

"Madam chair, you are not the question cop," Simon said.

Kiffmeyer, who once was Minnesota Secretary of State, then became angered.

"Calling me, as chair of the committee, a question cop. Really?"

Simon went on to answer Osmek's original question.

"To a miniscule extent, the answer is yes."

Voter ID was put to Minnesota voters in 2012 in as a proposed constitutional amendment. Voters rejected it.
