Nothing quite like Memorial Day weekend traditions. Burgers on the grill, boat in the water, wet a line or two - and of course to mourn and honor our deceased service men and women.
But, it wouldn't be a holiday weekend that kicks off summer in Minnesota if it wasn't for road work that could cause some holiday weekend travel delays.
This Memorial Day weekend there are numerous ongoing road construction projects scattered throughout the metro. And although many of them will pause for the holiday weekend, some of the more permanent projects will not according to Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kent Barnard - especially areas where a person might be trying to get out of town for the weekend.
"There are some closures on Highway 10," Barnard begins. "Three lane addition project in Coon Rapids, and there is a ramp closed there. Traffic is shifted there, but that should not have a major impact on traffic patterns. Down in the 35W, Bloomington area, there are some closures down there that were started earlier this year."
Barnard says to plan ahead, check traffic apps, and build in extra travel time to avoid the holiday weekend gridlock.
But MnDOT knows the importance of getting aroudn the state on such an important holiday.
"Most project teams will pull off the roadway around noon on Friday, and work should not resume until sometime on Tuesday morning," he adds. "That's to allow free, unimpeded traffic."
