Roads across the southwest corner of the state remain closed Friday afternoon because of blizzard conditions, nearly two days after the snow fell.

MinDOT district eight superintendent Lonnie Hoffman says he knows people have places to go, especially with it being only two days before Christmas.

“And I totally understand people wanting to get from point A to point B,” Hoffman says. “But they’re not being successful. I won’t say we have high traffic volumes, but the ones out there trying to make it are not having much success.”

Hoffman says the southwest corner of the state is hardest-hit by blowing snow and icy roadways, making travel difficult at best and leaving many drivers in ditches and fields. And that is in dangerously cold wind chills.

“I hope everybody’s got a full tank of gas and they don’t get stuck too deep, make sure their mufflers are clear of snow and whatnot,” Hoffman tells WCCO. “Just stay with your vehicle. Don’t leave it and we’ll get to you eventually.”

After opening Interstate 90 earlier Friday, MnDOT has again closed it as of 2:00 p.m. citing deteriorating conditions. The Minnesota State Patrol is saying do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
