Twin Cities residents are woke up Sunday morning to several inches of snow on the ground that likely wasn't there when they went to bed the night before

"It's a classic example of wringing every ounce of energy out of the atmosphere as we could for about two hours," said National Weather Service forecaster Mike Greisinger.

Twin Cities metro got between 3 and 5 inches of snow, and it fell largely between interstates 494 and 694 from Buffalo east to Washington County.

Making matters worse for walking on pavement or driving on roads, the snow fell on top of frozen slush left over from Saturday's rainfall.

"As that heavy band of snow came in, the slush kind of froze up, froze solid," said Griensinger. "If there was a road surface that really didn't have that slush cleaned up before the snow hit, then you've got snow on ice, which is always a really slippery combination."

Snowplows are out and with temperatures are high enough for chemicals to melt away icy areas.
