A new event is bringing out Minnesota women on Mothers Day to enjoy this year's fishing opener.

Ray Ruiz is the founder of Minnesota nonprofit Baztec Fishing and Outdoors and he says last year he had an idea to try to get more women involved in his local fishing opener.

"Strong tradition here in Minnesota of fishing openers and you know, it is male-dominated," Ruiz says. "However, what if we made it a fishing opener on Mother's Day, specifically for moms?"

With the help of local sponsors, Ruiz was able to provide poles and tackle boxes for 23 women, a group he says has grown to over 30 this year.

"One of the things that we like to do is definitely build community," Ruiz explained. "Hopefully we outgrow it where we have to go to a bigger lake and it gets to a point where we're on boats or kayaks."

This years all women's opener will be held Sunday on the north side of Crystal Lake in Robbinsdale from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"I think there would be a lot of moms that would love some time to themselves for some self care," says Ruiz. "You know, I think we can provide that for them."
