Four people are in custody after a Minneapolis police officer was shot on duty Friday night in what authorities describe an ambush.

The officer is expected to recover.

He is a seven-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department and assigned to the fourth precinct.

"We are extremely thankful and relieved that this officer is still with us," said MPD Chief Brian O'Hara in a released statement. "Thanks to the work of his MPD and law enforcement family, we have protected one of our own and we’ve taken four more potentially dangerous criminals off the street.”

The wounded officer was taken by fellow police to North Memorial Hospital.

He was released hours after the shooting, with dozens of fellow officers showing up to line the outside of the hospital exit.

The officers applauded while the injured man was escorted out by Chief Brian O'Hara and others.

The shooting happened at 9:16 p.m. in the 4300 block of Colfax Avenue on the north side.

The officer reportedly was in an unmarked car following a vehicle that reportedly was stolen and had been involved in a robbery near 36th and Queen Ave.

That car reportedly had been driven away and avoided Brooklyn Park police earlier in the week.

Police say 14 rounds were discharged from the car that officers were following.

More officers joined the pursuit and the suspect car crashed into a parked car at 21st and Upton Ave.

Police say the suspects are two men, a woman, and a juvenile male.

Hennepin County sheriff's deputies assisted Minneapolis police.

The men and juvenile were taken to HCMC for non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt in the incident.
