Newly released body camera video shows the moments Minneapolis police officers encountered a gunman during a deadly September 2 mass shooting inside a Minneapolis apartment complex.
The videos, which come with a viewer discretion warning, were released by the City of Minneapolis and show four different perspectives, including that of Officer Joseph Michnowski, who was shot twice in the stomach.
Video footage shows officers climbing the stairs inside Shoreline Plaza to the ninth floor, where they slowly open a hallway door and begin searching for the suspect—later identified as 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II—who had already killed two people and wounded three others. Officer Michnowski makes his way down one hall toward the entrance of another when gunfire erupts as Johnson emerges from behind an opposite corner.
Despite being hit, Officer Michnowski retreats down the hall and can be heard reporting over his radio, "Shooter's on the ninth floor, I took some rounds."
Moments later, a different angle captures the final shootout between officers and Johnson, who was fatally shot by police. A plume of smoke fills the hallway as the gunfight continues.
Another officer, Yahye Ahmed, was shot in the leg. Both Ahmed and Michnowski have since been released from the hospital, with Michnowski released on Wednesday.
Investigators said the violence began when Johnson shot and injured the mother of his child during a custody exchange outside the apartment complex. Johnson was facing eviction for several prior incidents, including one where he allegedly brandished a gun at apartment management.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
