MSP Airport showing off progress on the Terminal 2 expansion

The $263 million investment includes updates to concession spaces, restrooms, service amenities, the addition of two more gates.

MSP Airport's showing off progress on its terminal 2 expansion project today which is in its final year.

The $263 million investment includes updates to concession spaces, restrooms, service amenities, the addition of two more gates.

Bridget Rief is vice president of planning and development with the Metropolitan Airports Commission and says two already existing gates will also see some updates.

"For gates H13 and H14, those gates have boarding bridges, but they don't really have any gatehold space," Rief explains. "So we're providing adequate gatehold space for those as well. So it's two gates, but it's four gateholds in square footage."

Terminal 2 opened 25 years ago this month, and the updates are expected to be finished by next spring.

"We've been very purposeful in creating spaces that actually fit the amount of passengers in the gatehold space, that you should be fitting in the gateholds and not trying to squeeze or skimp on those kind of things," Rief adds. "And trying to provide the number of concessions that we need to have for the passengers that we have."

Rief also says the acquisition of MSP-based Sun Country by Allegiant Airlines could also help Terminal 2 traffic and workers by filling-in some of the down times for flights out of the smaller of MSP's terminals.

Project Summary:

  • Two new gates: H15 & H16
  • Re-spacing of gates H13 & H14
  • New concessions & restrooms
  • New loading dock & facility storage spaces
  • Additional airline/tenant support spaces
  • Terminal mechanical, electrical, and HVAC infrastructure replacement
