Murder charges have been filed against two teenagers in the shooting death of Jahmari Rice outside of his Richfield school earlier this week.

18-year old Fernando Alvarez and 19-year old Alfredo Solis are each facing one count of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder. Another student who was shot is in critical condition and a third had minor injuries. All five were students at South Education Center and knew each other.

According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told police that people began to gather like they were going to fight. That's when one of the suspects started firing their gun and hit three students.

Police found Rice laying on the sidewalk near a parking lot at the school. They used CPR to try to revive him. Police found the second victim lying near the door of the school being helped by a staff member. The third victim had minor injuries.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, who is bringing the charges in this case, says that the community must band together to stop crimes like this.

“Our community is dealing a tremendous tragedy this week. The senseless shooting outside a school in Richfield that took the life of 15-year-old Jahmari Rice, and critically wounded another teenage victim, is extremely unsettling. Thankfully, the third male teenager who was shot at did not get hurt."

“While we continue to heal from past trauma, we also grieve the untimely loss of Mr. Rice. In these difficult times, we must band together as a community, and do what we can to ensure justice is met. Our office will do our part in prosecuting these defendants.”

The suspects face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
