State lawmakers in St. Paul on Monday chose three new members to join the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents.
Two are from the healthcare field, while a third joins as a current city council member in West St. Paul.
She is Robin Gulley, who was elected along with Minnesota Nurses Association President Mary Turner and the former CEO of Allina Health Penny Wheeler.
Each will serve six year terms.
Current regent Tadd Johnson was reelected as well.
Among the big decisions the Regents are facing is the future of the U of M hospital system.
They are also working to replace President Joan Gabel, who has taken a position at the University of Pittsburgh.
The vote took place during a joint session of the Minnesota House and Senate.
The regents make up the governing board of the entire University of Minnesota system, which includes campuses in the Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Rochester.
The current regents who are leaving the board are Steve Sviggum, Darrin Rosha, and Ken Powell.
Sviggum, who had announced that he would not seek another term, drew much controvery earlier this year when he said an acquaintance suggested the Minnesota-Morris campus was "too diverse."
That comment led to Sviggum stepping down from his leadership post on the board.
