The Minneapolis Downtown Council is monitoring an up-tick in the homeless population on Nicollet Mall
President Adam Duinick says the "most logical explanation" for the increase is people shifting thought the city following the closure of city encampments elsewhere.
He says for now their ambassador team is initiating some baseline counts to track any potential trends.
" We are in the next seven days going to be taking counts of people," says Duinick, "if they're sleeping out there or staying out there, that way we'll have some baseline information to be able to track it."
He went on today say this is a fairly recent change.
" I think it's over the last week or two, "he says, " from what I'm told, and also such a minor uptick what it wasn't even really picked up by everybody."
To address the need, Duinick says there is constant support being provided by Hennepin County social workers, and the city is making a 500-person capacity storage facility available for peoples valuables.
