No one was injured when a Minneapolis police officer opened fire at an armed suspect early Thursday morning while responding to a 911 call.

Police were called around 12:30 a.m. by a man who reported that his mother was threatened at gunpoint by a neighbor at her home near Lake Street and 5th Avenue South.

When police arrived, the suspect exited the home with a firearm and failed to comply with police, prompting one officer to fire two shots from a service weapon.

"This incident underscores the dangers our officers face every single day," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said. "In a fraction of a second, they were faced with a life or death situation. I'm thankful no one was injured in this situation and I'm thankful for the professional manner in which our officers handled it."

The suspect was taken into custody. The officer who opened fire is on standard administrative leave.

The shooting happened just a few hours after police responded to two separate homicides involving an adult male and female who were shot and killed. No arrests have been announced in either of those shootings.
