A homeless encampment on the eastern edge of downtown Minneapolis is expected to be closed following the fatal shooting of a man earlier this week.

State officials say safety concerns are the reasons for closing the encampment near 15th Avenue South and Sixth Street south.

That location is not far from downtown Minneapolis in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.

No timetable for the closure has been announced.

The encampment is in Ward Six, represented by councilman Jamal Osman, who says in a statement that he's disgusted at how the state "willfully ignored" his request to have the camp closed.

The shooting happened Thursday morning, the victim died after he was taken to the hospital.
