Ope! Shattered backboard ends Minnesota high school game

A Minnesota high school boys section basketball game between Richfield and Westonka ended early Wednesday night after a thundering dunk shattered a glass backboard and sent parts of it plummeting to the court below.

It happened with just under 15 minutes left in the second half of the Class AAA Section 6 quarterfinal game when Richfield junior Gideon Horne caught an alley-oop pass and slammed the ball through the rim. Video from inside the gym showed the glass instantly shattering and Horne falling to the floor, with the rim also crashing to the floor.

"Honestly I don't feel anything, my adrenaline is like through the roof, so I literally don't feel a thing," Horne told WCCO TV afterwards. "But dang, this is crazy. I'm in shock right now."

The dunk put Richfield up by 37 points and both teams agreed to call the game. It was the first game of the Section 3 tournament, with Richfield being the number one seed and Westonka seeded number nine.

Richfield hosts Holy Angels on Saturday afternoon with a chance to go to the section finals.
