Minnesota third district congressman Dean Phillips told a national television audience Sunday that he hasn't decided if he'll run against Joe Biden for president.
But he did tell Major Garrett of the CBS program "Meet The Press" that the Democratic party needs to have multiple candidates when the primary season rolls around.
"If we don't heed that call, shame on us," Phillips said. "And the consequences, I believe, are going to be disasterous."
The Democrat did say there should be someone else who can join the race, someone who has the ability to stage a campaign.
"I think I'm well-positioned to be president of the United States," he said. "I do not believe I'm well-positioned to run for it right now. People who are should jump in, because we need to meet the moment. The moment is now. That is what the country is asking for."
Phillips last year became the first congressional Democrat to say Joe Biden should not run for a second term because it's time for new leaders with new ideas.
Phillips did say Sunday that Vice President Kamala Harris is qualified for the presidency, but he stopped short of saying she was the heir apparent for the Democratic party.
