Minnesota Second District Representative Angie Craig (D) was assaulted in her Washington D.C. apartment earlier this year and now prosecutors in the case are recommending more than three years in jail for the man responsible.
Craig was assaulted in her apartment building’s elevator this past February. According to Craig's office, the attack did not appear to be politically motivated.
A report was filed with the with the Police Department and in that report, the man was “acting erratic.”
The attack left her bruised, but she was mostly unhurt.
Kendrid Khalil Hamlin, 26, pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting Craig in June. Hamlin was also accused of assaulting two officers as they attempted to arrest him on the same day of Craig’s attack.
Prosecutors for Craig have recommended the court impose a 39-month sentencing for Hamlin, followed by three years of a supervised release.
“The defendant’s early morning assault of woman in her own apartment building elevator transformed an everyday ritual, going to get a morning cup of coffee, into a traumatic ordeal that has caused lasting emotional damage,” prosecutors said in their recommendation.
According to her lawyers, Craig was punched in the face and Hamlin prevented her from making an escape.
Hamlin’s attorneys said in an emailed statement to the Associated Press in June that he “accepted responsibility for his actions with the earnest hope of moving towards rehabilitation and the mental health treatment he very much wants and needs.”
“Unfortunately, we know that treatment and rehabilitation will not occur in prison. We are hopeful that all parties can work together to finally provide Mr. Hamlin with the opportunity to get mental health support and treatment, as well as stable housing upon his release,” said his federal public defenders, Katie D’Adamo Guevara and Eugene Jeen-Young Kim Ohm.
