Reconstruction of George Floyd Square begins Monday at 38th and Chicago in south Minneapolis, not long after the sixth anniversary of his murder.
The area had long been a hub of neighborhood businesses, and community life. The killing of Floyd by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin attracted thousands more to the area for personal reflection of the incident.
But it also raised local concerns because of increased crime.
The long-debated $15 million project will remake the intersection, including to allow buses and emergency vehicles to once again travel through it.
It will also maintain the memorial and keep some of its artifacts intact, including the iconic fists that surround the area.
Other planned improvements include on-street parking, access to homes and businesses, bike trails, green space and stormwater management.
The square is expected to be closed for construction through the end of next year.
