Recreational marijuana becomes law in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Gov. Walz signs the bill at noon at the state capitol building, following years of discussion and a legislative session that included marathon floor debate.
The measure allows adult use of recreational marijuana with restrictions.
It also allow for the expungement or re-sentencing of cannabis convictions.
Representative Zach Stephenson was the author of the House version of the bill and led the conference committee that hammered out the compromise.
"I can see first-hand that our current laws around cannabis are doing more harm than good," Stephenson said during the debate leading up to the historic vote at the state capitol. "They are costing our state so much both in terms of dollars and in human cost. We can do a lot better. Minnesotans deserve that freedom and respect to make their own decisions about this."
Former Governor Jesse Ventura is expected to attend the bill signing.
Ventura was a strong advocate for legalizing marijuana during his term two decades ago.
