Over the weekend, KARE 11 anchor Rena Sarigianopoulos was hit with a gut punch after her parents’ home caught fire, leaving it destroyed. But with their tragedy comes hope.

Sarigianopoulos joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Chad Hartman to discuss the outpouring of support she and her family have seen from friends and complete strangers in the community throughout this week.

“I’m going to try not to cry. The amazing outpouring of support from friends and family and strangers has just been unbelievable and overwhelming,” Sarigianopoulos said.

Fighting through tears, Sarigianopoulos said that she and her family aren’t always the best at taking help and that it’s been hard for her, watching them struggle, knowing there isn’t anything she can do to help.

“That part’s been real hard, but in a good way, because the people of this city and state are just unbelievable,” Sarigianopoulos said. “That said, my parents are doing okay.”

Sarigianopoulos shared that their house, which was a fourplex, burned down as an act of “intentional fire” Sunday night into Monday morning. She clarified that her parents’ house was not the target of the fire, but their neighbor’s house was, as the fire was started by their son.

“The neighbors that are connected to them, their son set their house on fire, and it quickly spread to my parents’ house and burned it,” Sarigianopoulos said.

Luckily, Sarigianopoulos said that her parents were awake when the fire started, allowing them to get out of the house in time with essential items.

“This could have been very different,” Sarigianopoulos said.
