Man dead after shooting by a federal agents in Minneapolis

DHS is reporting a gun was found at the scene after a man was shot by Border Patrol agents

A 37-year-old man shot Saturday by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis has died according to hospital records. He was shot during a confrontation with U.S. Border Patrol agents in south Minneapolis Saturday morning. The man had been identified as 51-years old, but Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed his age as 37. He has not been identified.

"This is a 37 year old white male," says Chief O'Hara. "Who is a Minneapolis resident and we believe he is an American citizen. We have not been told any official reports of what has led up to the shooting, but we have seen the video that is circulating on social media."

This shooting happened in the area of 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue. The Department of Homeland Security is saying a gun was recovered at the scene. DHS distributed a photo of a handgun they said was on the person who was shot.

The Department of Homeland Security also released the following statement:

"As DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, seen here. The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect also had 2 magazines and no ID—this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement. About 200 rioters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault law enforcement on the scene, crowd control measures were deployed for the safety of the public and law enforcement. This situation is evolving, and more information is forthcoming."

After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered and screamed profanities at federal officers, calling them “cowards” and telling them to go home. One officer responded mockingly as he walked away, telling them: “Boo hoo.” Agents elsewhere shoved a yelling protester into a car.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz apparently confirmed the incident, and again asked for the Trump administration to pull federal agents out of the city.

The public is asked to avoid the area, which is blocked off by police tape. The Minnesota State Patrol also just declared an unlawful assembly, meaning anyone who doesn't leave the area could be arrested.

Witnesses say a large crowd is gathering at the scene and creating a hostile situation. There are some small fires burning, and chemical irritants are being deployed to keep protestors back.

Video posted on social media shows federal agents scuffling with a person before shots rang out.

"We are aware of reports of another shooting involving federal law enforcement in the area of 26th Street W and Nicollet Ave," the City of Minneapolis posted to social media. "We are working to confirm additional details. We ask the public to remain calm and avoid the immediate area."

The Minnesota DFL party also released a statement:

“American citizens will believe their own eyes, not the lies from DHS, ICE, and Republicans. The video is horrifyingly clear: federal agents executed a man in broad daylight the morning after thousands of Minnesotans gathered for a day of peaceful protests,” said DFL Party Chair Richard Carlbom.“Untrained federal agents are unleashing militarized chaos on our state, terrorizing our communities of color, and repeatedly using deadly force. The brutality and violence must stop. ICE needs to leave immediately.”

"I’ve seen with my own eyes the video of another horrific killing by ICE agents this morning in Minneapolis," Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig wrote on social media. "This is sickening. The agency is beyond out of control. How much more evidence do my Republican colleagues in Minnesota need to speak out?"

Minnesota Rep. and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer wrote this on social media:

"The governor and local leaders’ rhetoric has empowered criminals and put federal law enforcement’s lives at risk. It’s dangerous and has made the situation in Minneapolis much worse. Unlike my Democrat colleagues, I’m going to let law enforcement conduct their investigation and not jump to asinine conclusions. We are grateful no Border Patrol officers were harmed."
