Authorities are on the lookout for one of four wolves that escaped from a sanctuary in Chisago County, Minnesota late last week.

Caretakers at the Wild Life Science Center in Stacy are pleading for the public to remain calm while they search for the animal.

The animals escaped from the sanctuary by digging their way out of a fenced-in area of the property. The sanctuary is home to 120 wolves, the largest captive population in North America.

Two of the wolves have perished already. One was hit by a car, suffered a broken back, and was euthanized at the center. The other is presumed dead after the rescue team heard gunshots following a sighting.

On Wednesday morning, however, the center was able to retrieve one of the wolves, leaving only one left to be found, a five-year-old wolf named Gigantor.

The Wild Life Science Center is working with Anoka County Sheriff’s Office in their search for the animal.

In an interview with WCCO on Monday, Megan Beckel, the animal care coordinator for the sanctuary, said that they are not going to press charges if the animal is shot, but they would like the body back.

The Wild Life Science Center is asking that if you see the animal, take a picture of it, note its location and call the center at 651-464-3993.
