The life and legacy of Sid Hartman was honored on Tuesday morning as U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar presented Chad Hartman an official copy of the U.S. Senate statement for the record, a written account of Klobuchar’s remarks honoring Sid given from the floor of the U.S. Senate.
"I think what we all loved about Sid is that he would never give up," Klobuchar said outside of Minnetonka City Hall. "He never gave up on a good story and he never gave up on our community whether it was through his relentless coverage of our Minnesota teams and it also meant his being such an intrepid journalist making sure our stories got on the national stage."
Klobuchar spoke about the longtime relationship her father, Jim Klobuchar, had with Sid as a colleague of his at the Star Tribune.
"There's infamous stories that they would compete for column space when they wrote sports," she said. "The story is my dad went down to the typeset area and tore up some of the paragraphs of Sid's column to put his own column in the area."
Chad Hartman spoke about his father's competitiveness and work ethic.
"He would compete with people like Jim," Hartman said. "I witnessed some of those times where it was friendly and some of those times where it wasn't so friendly."
Aside from the accomplishments, Chad added that it was the love for people, interactions, friendship, and his kindness for children that kept Sid going for so long.
"He had such a kind heart for children and if he could interact with kids or help the kids out," he said. "I think my father's life was broadened out even more with my youngest son who's had a myriad of health issues. He could help him a to a point, but it was more about just being loving to him."
Sid Hartman died Sunday, October 18 at the age of 100.
