Leaders in the Republican controlled Minnesota Senate want to permanently lower income tax levels for Minnesotans.
Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller (R) says that with a $9.2 billion surplus, now's the time.
“The state of Minnesota is collecting too much money from the people, and we have heard loud and clear from people all across the state, give the money back,” Miller said.
During debate on the Senate floor, Ann Rest (D) introduced an amendment that would give money directly to Minnesotans.
“Would you rather have $1,000 for your family of three or four, to be able to pay for groceries for an entire month,” Rest say. “An entire month? It's not chump change.”
The debate in the senate is continuing Thursday.
