“This project is important because we all know that housing comes first.”
That’s Minnesota Senator Tina Smith who took part in a groundbreaking of a new public housing project that will add 84 new modular units for Twin Cities’ residents struggling to afford housing.
“When you have a safe, affordable decent place to live, when you have a home, everything else in your life can work and can come together,” said Smith.
Abdi Warsame is Executive Director of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority and he says these scattered homes are critical.
“They are proven to provide families a solid foundation for upward economic mobility,” says Warsame.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says the new units will be in several areas of Minneapolis, not just lower-income areas.
“You can have public housing in North Minneapolis and Southwest Minneapolis, which is part of this project,” Frey explains.
