A September 10 sentencing date has been set for a Hugo woman who threatened Minnesota House Speaker and Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth (Cold Spring).

43-year-old Rachel Welsch pleaded guilty to threats of violence after leaving a series of threatening voicemails for Demuth in January and February.

Those included messages that suggest Welsch was learning to shoot, and "getting really good."

A judge granted an extreme risk protection order in the case, which temporarily suspends Welsch's ability to purchase or possess firearms.

The charges and then sentencing for Welsch come after last June's assassination of DFL state Rep. Melissa Hortman, the shooting of another state lawmaker, and threats to attack even more by Vance Boelter, who pleaded guilty to federal charges last month.
